What do you do if a child is immediate danger?
If a child is in immediate danger please call 999.
What should I do if a child makes a disclosure that he/she is being harmed?
- Listen carefully to what is being said to you and try not to interrupt.
- Reassure the pupil it is not their fault.
- Stress that it was the right thing to tell an adult.
- Be calm, attentive and non-judgemental.
- Do not promise to keep what is said a secret.
- Ask non-leading questions and use TED to clarify if necessary:
T- tell me more
E- explain that to me
D- describe what happened
- Inform your DSL or Deputy DSL (or Head Teacher / Co-Chair of Governors where appropriate)*
- Remember, anyone can make a referral to Children's Services
