How does our Learning grow?

Why is PE important?

PE is important because it helps pupils to lead a healthy balanced lifestyle, where they can build and develop their fitness skills. 

Through PE, children are able to relieve stress and anxiety by exercising and carrying out physical activity. 

In PE, children are able to build on essential life skills and fundamental motor skills that enables them to develop confidence and leads to safe and successful participation in a variety of sports. 

 

When is PE taught?

There is 2 hours of PE per week in each class. This contains two, one hour PE lessons. PE is taught in line with the National Curriculum. This is supported by the planning available on ‘PE Planning’. The objectives are all clearly outlined in the plans and provides opportunities for assessment in every lesson. During the summer term, we dedicate an entire week for Sports, including sports day itself. This week consists of a carousel of different sporting activities and events.

 

How is PE taught?

PE is taught both inside and outside the classroom. There are also opportunities for PE to be taught on trips. It is taught by identification of fundamental skills, which are then developed over the course of the year. Each year group would then develop these skills further as they grow older. The school have developed solid links with PE Sports Partnership, who provide all children with opportunities to attend different sporting events, therefore promoting the inclusive environment that our school values significantly.

Who do we learn about in PE?

Previously, Steve Frewa commonwealth, gold medallist visited the school for an entire day where he gave a whole school assembly on his accomplishments and how he became the gymnast he is today. He also had a session with each class, where he led them in some sporting activities. There are definitely other possible opportunities for other sportsmen and sportswomen to attend the school

 

How do we assess and monitor PE?

There are opportunities within every lesson for assessment, whether this is peer assessment or self-assessment. Additionally, there are other opportunities at the end of the topic on PE Planning, for a more formal assessment. 

PE lessons are evidenced by photographs, videos, pupil voice and teacher voice.
