At St Bernadette Catholic Primary School, music lessons fulfil National Curriculum requirements as well as providing a broad, balanced and enjoyable experience for all our pupils.
Weekly music lessons led by a music specialist from the Herts Music Service take place for all children from Nursery to Year 6 and focus on musical skills progression through songs and vocal activities based on the Voices Foundation programme, whole class and group composition and performing tasks, and focused listening. Early years music lessons also support the curriculum areas of learning of physical development, social and emotional development, speech and language and expressive arts.
We meet as a whole school each week to sing in Songs of Praise, where we prepare songs for school productions and mass, as well as rehearsing songs which promote values and support our rights respecting school commitment.
In addition to this, we have: a choir of more than 60 children who perform to a high standard; recorder and whole class ukulele in Year 5; and African drumming in Year 4. Children in Year 4 also take part twice a year in concerts at the Abbey and Alban Arena as part of the combined St Albans Primary Schools Music Association.
