Art Curriculum

Art education has been proven to have remarkable impacts on academic, social, and emotional outcomes, helping us develop empathy as we learn more about societies, cultures and history. 

Engagement with art helps us stretch our minds beyond the boundaries of the printed text or the rules of what is provable to encompass visual-spatial learning and develop motor skills. Through art, we learn to express ourselves confidently and creatively.

When is Art taught?

Art is taught through thematic units for EYFS, KS1, KS2. Art is taught for 6-8 hours per term in KS1 and KS2. Art is taught every half term through every topic in the EYFS.

How is Art taught?

Art is taught through a combination of subject knowledge and skills. Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom.

What do we learn in Art?

In art, we learn about the mediums of collage, textiles, photography, drawing, painting, 3D form and sculpture, as well as mixed media.

How do we assess and monitor Art?

Children in the EYFS have an individual learning journal that will hold their personal pieces of art. Photographs and observations will be uploaded to Tapestry and printed for the journal. Examples of pupil voice will be evidenced through observations.

Children in Ks1 and KS2 will have an individual sketch book that will record evidence of designs, drawings and paintings. They will provide the children the opportunity to evaluate and analyse their personal creative works. Photographs of finished products will be taken and uploaded to the school system and saved in an art folder. Some examples will be printed for the art folder. Examples of pupil voice will be evidenced in the art folder. Plans for all year groups will demonstrate links to the EYFS and National Curriculum.
