School Mission Statement


The phonics programme that we follow at St Bernadette Primary School is ‘Letters and Sounds’. We use this programme to work through the phonic stage 1 to 6 in daily phonic sessions. In addition to ‘Letters and Sounds’, we use the ‘Jolly Phonics’ programme songs and actions to enhance the Letters and Sounds programme and make it a multi-sensory learning experience for the children.

The children start learning phonics through phase 1 activities based on environmental sounds, rhyme and rhythm when they enter the school in Nursery and they move on to Phase 2 when they enter the Reception class. The children then continue to work through the phonic stages, up to Phase 6. Typically, this means learning Phase 4 in Reception, Phase 5 in Year 1 and Phase 6 in Year 2 but this is flexible to suit the children’s needs and abilities.

An annual parent/guardian workshop is offered to the Reception and Year 1 parents in the Autumn Term, offering lots of practical ideas and games to support their child’s phonics learning at home and information regarding the Year 1 Phonics Screening.
